This is my AS Media Studies blog, please note that what is on my blog may not be posted at the time that it was made as I have changed things so as they fit in an order, thank you :)
Here is my slide show about the production process in tv and film. It includes when the three different stages happen, It explains what the different stages are and what happens within them.
My thoughts: Active V Passive- I in some ways agree with the active and passive theory, for example if someone sees a film that inspires them then they might want to go out and do something, by this I mean that it could change the way they think about something. However, If there was a film about murder it doesn't mean that it will put the idea in someones head to kill somebody, this is a way in which I disagree with the passive side. I also both agree and disagree with the active side sort of in the same way. For example, if the film is trying to promote something such as stopping animal testing then it's the audience members choice in how they react to that. Hypodermic needle theory- I think of this theory in the same way as i do with the passive side of the active v passive theory... I also think that it depends on the induvidual in terms of how the media makes them think. The reception theory- This happens I think in quite a lot of films... Uses and gratifications theory- I mainly agree with this theory and as i have already said, it depends on the induvidual. Therefore I think that if there is a film with such a strong message then it will deffinetly effect the audience members to act upon something, however they may just choose to do what they want anyway. In my coraline textual analysis, I think that the film is deffinetly trying to set a scene in the audiences head and make them understand what type of film it is, however I don' think the film particually chages peoples thoughts as there isn't really a very clear messge that it gives out. However, I think that this again depends on the induvidual and how they may interpret the message that the film may be giving out to people.
Levi Strauss belivied that the way that we understand different words depends on understanding the difference in the words rather than any meaning that they contain. An example of a binary opposition that could be used in a thriller could be good v bad which would show how people such as the good are affected by the bad and maybe how they end up being the victims. Another that could be used in a thriller could be war v peace which could be used in a political or a war type of thriller. I think that when it comes to making our own thriller, we will try and include a opposition to create a more dramatic feeling for our audience as they will like to see the difference in things and how this brings out thriller together. Propp's character types theory- Propp's discovered that there are 7 different character types that characters fall within...
The hero. Traditionally the hero or protagonist in a film is played by a male character who is able to defeat everything in the end.
The villian. The cause of disruption and disorder who is the enemy of the hero. The villian is usually the threat to the heros saftey.
The dispatcher. The person who sends the hero on a quest/jeourny. The person is usually like a farther figure tot he hero.
The donor. Gives something to the hero for help (Skill/object).
The helper/helpers. heros assistant or assistants.
Heroine. usually a passive and vinrable character who is threatend by the villian and needs the support of the hero.
False hero. Intentially seems to be good but then is revealed to be not what people think they are. These characters usually decive other people and can be manipulative.
I think that when it comes to making our own thriller that it will be good to use some of these but also to break some of the stereotypes to make our thriller more unique.
